Overview
The Yoga Association of Alberta (YAA) is a non-profit registered charity that has served as the province’s umbrella yoga organization since 1976. It operates as Canada’s longest-standing inclusive yoga body, bringing together students, teachers, and practitioners from diverse backgrounds, styles, and lineages. Rather than operating a single studio, the YAA functions as a central hub that supports yoga across Alberta through teacher training, mentorship, certification, and community events. The organization is led by a volunteer Board of Directors representing both urban and rural communities. In 2026, the YAA celebrates its 50th anniversary with a series of free workshops featuring internationally recognized teachers, including a session with scholar and author Doug Keller on shoulder mobility. These anniversary events underscore the group’s commitment to sharing yoga’s benefits widely and affordably.
The YAA acknowledges that its work takes place on Treaty 6, 7, and 8 territories, as well as portions of Treaties 4 and 10, and expresses gratitude to the First Nations, Inuit, and Métis peoples who have walked these lands for generations. This land acknowledgment reflects the organization’s values of mindfulness and reconciliation.
Membership & Offerings
First-year associate membership is free for all Albertans, with subsequent years costing only $10 annually. Members receive access to an online community, a regular e-newsletter, and three issues per year of Yoga Bridge magazine. They also gain entry to the YAA’s free 50th anniversary workshops and other events. The organization runs a mentorship-based 200-hour hatha yoga teacher training program, along with advanced training levels at 500, 750, and 1,000 hours. Certification and recertification paths are available for established teachers. Training is flexible, pay-as-you-go, and customized to individual needs. The YAA also offers a teacher directory to help students find instructors nearby, and operates a store selling yoga props, mats, accessories, and books.
In addition, the YAA provides group insurance for teachers, a studio accreditation program, and various resources for yoga professionals. Job postings for the yoga community can be submitted and browsed. The organization’s office is open Mondays and Thursdays from 9:30 a.m. to 2 p.m.
Community & Outreach
Outreach is a core pillar of the YAA’s mission. The organization brings free online yoga events to marginalized communities, Indigenous schools, prisons, and the general public, aiming to make yoga accessible regardless of circumstance. Members’ support funds these programs. The YAA also hosts a video library with recordings such as a 50th anniversary workshop series, a teachers showcase series, professional development webinars, and chair yoga and beginners yoga outreach sessions. The YAA’s inclusive and cooperative community welcomes all, and its volunteer board includes teachers and students from across the province. The board members bring diverse personal yoga journeys—from iRest meditation training to Iyengar, Anusara, and Feldenkrais influences—reflecting the organization’s broad philosophical reach. The YAA encourages members to invite friends and family to anniversary events, and those who refer five or more new sign-ups by December 31, 2026, are entered into a draw for a $50 store credit.
